ConsulTATION SERVICES

On‑Site Psychoeducational Consultation Services for First Responders

About The Service

Police departments, firehouses, and other first responder agencies face unique operational and human challenges. Dr. Jen Marks, a licensed psychologist, provides on-site, group-based psychoeducational consultation services designed specifically for firefighters, law enforcement personnel, EMTs, and paramedics.

These 90-minute consultations are delivered during working hours at your facility and are structured as educational briefings—not therapy. The purpose is to equip entire shifts or units with practical, evidence-based information and skills that support psychological wellbeing, resilience, and operational readiness in high-stress roles.

Service Structure and Logistics

  • Delivery: On-site at your firehouse, station,      precinct, or department facility
  • Format: Interactive group consultation for teams,      shifts, or units
  • Length: 90 minutes
  • Scheduling: Conducted during working hours to minimize      disruption and maximize participation
  • Billing: Consultation and educational services (not      clinical therapy)

What Departments Can Expect

Each on-site consultation provides:

  • Clear, evidence-based education about occupational      stress, trauma exposure, and common mental health challenges faced by      first responders
  • Practical, field-relevant coping strategies and      resilience-building tools
  • Guidance on recognizing early warning signs of      distress in oneself and fellow team members
  • Information on available resources, referral pathways,      and next-step supports
  • A professional, confidential, and stigma-free      educational environment—without personal disclosure, diagnosis, or therapy

Sessions are designed to be practical, respectful of first responder culture, and directly applicable to day-to-day operational realities.

Why Mental Health Matters in Emergency Service Work

Depression affects approximately 30% of first responders, compared to about 7% in the general population (National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI).

Studies estimate that up to 20% of firefighters and law enforcement professionals experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), compared to about 3.5% of adults in the general U.S. population (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA).

Suicide rates among firefighters are estimated to be as much as 18 per 100,000, which is higher than the general population rate of about 13 per 100,000. Law enforcement professionals also face an elevated risk, with some studies reporting that police officers are 54% more likely to die by suicide than by homicide (Ruderman Family Foundation, 2018).
